EMC-PHASE 4 - DESKTOP VIDEO DREAMS
Please take the time to read this text file. It explains what we at EMC feel
about the current CD market and why we decided to develop this CD series.
Firstly, let us take this opportunity to thank you for purchasing this CD.
We sincerely hope that you enjoy using it. We would welcome any constructive
feedback that you would like to offer us. Unlike some other companies, we
actually care what you, our customer, think and feel about our products.
We have seen almost every CD title in existence and sadly, the general trend
appears to be "shovel as much data on as possible and to hell with the
quality" The majority of the CDs we have seen are developed as multi platform
CDs and while this may advantageous for the company selling them, the end
user on the Amiga is faced with a CD containing a high proportion of files
that he probably can't even use.
This approach is evidently used by the so called "big boys" in the CD
industry. The result...a CD that is CRAP!. These CDs are advertised with
promises of sheer quality and their titles feature such words as
"Professional" "The Best" etc.. How many of you have bought CDs like this?
We'll bet that you'll wholeheartedly agree with what we are saying!
We genuinely feel that the current situation stinks and with this series
of CDs we at EMC are aiming to set the standards on which all CDs on the
Amiga will be judged. A big claim you say? Well folks! the contents and
layout of this CD should convince even the most sceptical of you out there!
A Quick word on Shapshotting
We have snapshotted all icons (directory, preview, text etc.) using the
default Amiga Topaz 8 font as the font for the Workbench, System & Screen
preference settings. If windows and/or icons open up too close together, to
far apart or in strange places, it's probably because you are using a none
standard font.
System Details
For those of you that are interested, we thought that some of you would
like to know the sort of hardware and software that was used to develop
these CDs.
Hardware
AMIGA 2000
Fitted with a 40mb (WOW!) hard drive and 1mb of chip ram and 2mb of fast
ram and 4 floppy drives. This machine has both kickstart 1.3 and 2.04 roms
fitted and was used to mainly for checking software compatibility on WB 1.3.
AMIGA 1200
Fitted with a 540mb Quantum Maverick (very fast) IDE hard drive, 10mb of
32bit ram, a 20mhz CoPro and an external floppy. This machine was/is linked
to the 3000 via Parnet and was used for additional storage (?) processing AGA
data and as a second machine for creating the IFF thumbnails on this CD and
creating the text files
AMIGA 3000
This machine was at the heart of the CD development. Internally this
machine is fitted with a Seagate 1.2 Gb SCSI2 hard drive, WB 3.1, 30mb ram,
Opalvision, Cybervision 64 4mb graphics card, a Multiface2 card, a high
density floppy drive and a Mercury 040 accelerator running at 28mhz (22 Mips)
A PC (God I hate them!) tower case was used to house additional scsi devices.
These included a 4.3 gigabyte Quantum GrandPrix SCSI2 hard drive, a Toshiba
double speed CDRom, a 128mb Fujitsu Magneto Optical drive, a 250mb Archive
Viper tape streamer and a 16 gigabyte Sony DDS2 DAT backup tape drive.
Software
Directory Opus v4 (don't like 5), ADpro v2.3 & ADpro v2.5, Amiback v2.0i,
Amiback Tools v1.05, PROcontrol v1.0, Article Editor, Pagestream 2.22 & 3.0h
BME, Typesmith 2.5a, DPaint v4.1 & DPaint v5, XIPaint v3.2a, Scala MM400,
Photogenics v1.2a, ImageStudio v2.30, PersonalPaint v6.4 and... custom Arexx
scripts by Don Cox
A word of caution...
If it doesn't say EMC on the CD you don't really know what you're getting...
If you have already purchased a CD from an advert or company claiming that
the CD was "Professional" "The Ultimate" etc. only to find that it would
have been best described as PATHETIC you will fully appreciate what we are
talking about!
Please remember, if the CD looks interesting, you would be best advised to...
WAIT FOR A POSITIVE MAGAZINE REVIEW BEFORE YOU BUY IT!
EMC-PHASE 4 - DESKTOP VIDEO DREAMS
A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE
BEN VOST
Amiga Computing's Editor... For inspiration, valuable feedback, advice,
moral support. He was also responsible for the design and rendering of the
CD artwork and inlay cards. My thanks also go out to Fiona for putting up with my
constant stream of "afterhours" phone calls to Ben! My sincere and heartfelt
thanks go to both of you.
If any of you are interested in commissioning Ben for a project of yours,
you can contact him at; IDG Media,
Adlington Park,
Macclesfield,
Cheshire. SK10 4NP
email: ben@subway.demon.co.uk
PAUL BETTS
From Netcom Systems, Ipswich... Who lent us quite a few of his CDs so we
could use them for the forthcoming EMC project "INDEX". Thanks also for your
continued help and support.
LARRY HICKMOTT
From LH Publishing... Who created the emc.INFO font book and hopefully (?)
for creating the Phase 4 update pages for it! Larry has always been willing
to help (although not very happy about it sometimes) in any way he could.
CARL GAMBLE
From Optonica, who arranged the cutting of the Phase 4 Gold disc master.
Carl has offered me a consistent high level of professional service and
technical support. Thanks also to the guys at Optonica for producing the
Multimedia Experience demo for this CD
PAUL LESURF
From Blittersoft. Thanks for arranging with the guys at ImageLabs for the
custom Imagevision demo that went on this CD.
IAN HAWKINS
Including all the guys at Electronic Arts. Thanks for the support and the
Deluxe Paint 5 Demo for this CD.
DON COX
Who wrote some custom Arexx scripts for me to use with AdPro, Pagestream3
and Directory Opus. These scripts saved me from becoming an "Automaton"
while also saving me many hours of boring work. These scripts made the
daunting task of image conversion and creating font preview screens into
a simple one.
BARBARA NEWALL
From IDG Media (Amiga Computing) who did an excellent job (with Ben Vost)
of producing the films for the CDs artwork and cover and also for meeting
the deadlines that I imposed. Thanks for everything!
And obviously everybody else who helped, advised, offered invaluable
feedback and supported me during the production of these CD's.
These people include...
IAN at White Knight Technologies
PAUL AUSTIN and all the guys at Amiga Computing
NICK VEITCH and all the guys at Amiga Format
All the guys at Amiga Shopper
MIKE LOADER at Soft Logik, St. Louis,USA
TONY BULLOCK at Gordon Harwoods (Softwood UK)
DAN PETITT at Digita
BABS PATRICK for having an understanding ear!
And...
My bank manager!? for financing the whole project
and also...
A special thanks to my wife Rosa and my two son's Erik & Reno who were
forced to put up with a real grumpy preoccupied (and often impossible to
live with) Dad while he spent many, many, many, long hours, days and weeks
putting these CD's together!
and also...
We would like to thank all the PD and Shareware authors, font designers,
artists, scanner freaks and everybody else who created the data that we are
using on this CDs.
and last, but not least...
To you, our valued customer, who bought the CD
To all of you....
THANK YOU!
